A classic tragedy. A raw new sound. A love story pushed to breaking point. Inspired by Georg Büchner's groundbreaking Woyzeck, Franz & Marie breathes new life into the German classic with a haunting story of love, trauma and survival – driven by the soul-rattling sound of Indie Raw Folk.

Franz Woyzeck has returned from the front line, but the war has followed him home. Haunted by nightmares and disturbing visions, he clings to the two people who mean everything to him: Marie and their baby, Georgie. Franz will do anything to provide for his family, but as poverty, prejudice and psychological torment close in, their hopes of a future together become increasingly fragile.

At the heart of Franz & Marie is its extraordinary live sound. Created from music by Chris Broderick and Rob Shepherd of cult Kentish band The Singing Loins, the raw indie-folk score is performed by a 14-strong company of actor-musicians. Music, storytelling and performance collide to create a visceral world inspired by late 19th-century European folklore.

Inspired by Woyzeck but given a powerful new voice, Franz & Marie places love at the heart of Büchner's tragedy and asks what happens when devotion is tested by a brutal world. Raw, haunting and deeply human, this is a story of love, trauma and what happens when a good man is broken by a bad world.
